Reflective of the principles of partnership and capacity development laid out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and reiterated by the Secretary-General in his vision for the UN, UNMAS is committed to building national and local capacity to coordinate and implement mine action programmes.
This goal is also reflected in strategic objective three of the Strategy of the United Nations on Mine Action 2024, which aims to transfer mine action functions from the United Nations to national authorities and increase their capacity.
UNMAS promotes national ownership across all its programmes, for example, by training and mentoring in strategic planning, operational planning, information management, quality assurance, resource mobilization, explosive ordnance disposal, improvised explosive device disposal, and explosive hazard first responder training to local authorities.
Ensuring national capacity to manage mine action programmes is vital to developing a long-term sustainable response.
