UNMAS visits mine clearance site in Central Equatoria

(May 2015) A United Nations Mine Action Service team conducts a Quality Assurance mission to a mine clearance site operated by one of its contractors. At the time of the visit the contractor, MineTech International, had been working on clearing a site near Aru Junction in Central Equatoria for 8 days. Some local citizens had discovered an anti-tank mine and two anti-personnel mines while clearing land used for making charcoal. After a community liaison team was alerted to their presence by the community, UNMAS tasked MineTech with the site’s clearance, conducted with a MineWolf and by manual clearance methods.
Once cleared by MineTech the site will be turned back over to UNMAS, who in turn will notify the government, landowners, and the surrounding community that it is safe to return to and begin working again.
