UNMAS Syria and the Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Discuss Future Cooperation on Mine Action

Damascus, Syria – May 15, 2025 – A meeting was held at the end of last month between Mr. Joseph McCartan, Chief Mine Action Programme of UNMAS Syria and H.E. Mr. Raed As-Saleh, Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, to discuss humanitarian mine action in Syria.

The discussion focused on the current state of humanitarian mine action in the country, the Ministry’s future plans and the role of UNMAS in supporting the Ministry’s efforts to establish a National Mine Action Centre.

H.E. Minister As-Saleh emphasized the need for a coordinated response plan to address the widespread threat of mines and explosive ordnance in Syria and the willingness of the Ministry to work with UNMAS.

Mr. McCartan expressed UNMAS willingness to support national capacity development and its desire for close cooperation with the Ministry and concerned national authorities.

The meeting underscored the shared commitment to addressing the Humanitarian Mine Action challenges in Syria to ensure the safety and security of its people and longer term reconstruction efforts.
